The Gujarat government plans to set up a first-of-its-kind labour and skill development university, which will offer courses in labour management, labour welfare and other related issues and promote research in the same. The Ahmedabad-based Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute is expected to be upgraded as a university for this purpose.
Sources in the state labour & employment department said such a university was needed considering the largescale requirement of trained manpower for various schemes run by the state government and the Centre.
At present, only Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute studies labour issues for the government and offers some minor courses in labour-related issues. We now plan to establish a full-fledged university for the purpose, they said.
Sources said the chief minister had cleared the proposal to convert Mahatma Gandhi Labour Institute into Mahatma Gandhi Labour & Skill Development University.
They said the objective is to provide specialised and semi-specialised degree and diploma courses in labour management, human resources management, labour laws (both Indian and international),etc. The government also plans to focus more on the skill development of labour.
At present, drafting of the Act to set up this university is under way after which it will be placed for CMs and cabinets approval. Initially, the government plans to affiliate this proposed university with Patan-based Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University. The university is expected to be established before the 2012-13 academic year, sources said.
