Somnath beach declared ‘danger zone’,bathing banned

Following frequent incidents of drowning off the Somnath beach,the popular tourist spot has been declared a ‘danger zone’ and bathing and playing in the waves there has been banned.

Following frequent incidents of drowning off the Somnath beach,the popular tourist spot has been declared a ‘danger zone’ and bathing and playing in the waves there has been banned.

The Junagadh district administration has issued a notification to this effect on Friday. “The notification has been issued for 60 days,” said Junagadh additional district collector A V Sinojia.

He added said the notification was issued following a request in this regard by the district police headquarters.

This ban comes a couple of days after a student from Uttar Pradesh drowned in the sea while playing with his three friends.

As many as nine people have reportedly drowned there in the last 10 years.

Located near the famous Somnath temple,crores of rupees have spent by the state government on the beautification of the beach to promote tourism.

The beach also finds a mention in the Khushboo Gujarat Ki tourism campaign featuring actor Amitabh Bachchan.
