With monsoon nearing its end, Gujarat has recorded an overall water storage of 92.05% across the 207 water dams, including the Sardar Sarovar Dam (SSP) in Narmada district — which is known as the lifeline of the state.

The copious amount of rainfall in Central Gujarat in August has meant that the region has 99.57% storage in local water bodies as of date. With Gujarat recording a total of 972.8 mm of rainfall during season until Thursday morning, most regions of the state now have more than over 80% water storage along with the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Narmada filling up to 96.77% of his capacity at 137.73 meters on Friday evening.

The dam is 95 centimetres short of its Full Reservoir Level of 138.68 meters. According to the data of the Narmada, Water Resources, Water Supply and Kalpsar Department, the state has recorded a gross storage of 23245.34 Million Cubic Metres (MCM) — which makes 92.05% of total storage. Of this, Sardar Sarovar Dam has a current gross storage of 9154.20 MCM, just shy of its full capacity, which stands at 9460 MCM.

Out of the 206 dams located across North, Central, and South Gujarat as well as Kutch and Saurashtra, 110 dams are completely filled with Central Gujarat having the maximum storage at 99.57% with nine of 17 dams completely filled. South Gujarat, which has recorded a storage of 91.45% with nine of 13 dams completely full, is in a deficit of 227 MCM compared to the storage on September 20, 2023. North Gujarat, too, with a filling of 68.78% has recorded a deficit of 175.79 MCM compared to September 20, last year. In Kutch, with 12 of 20 dams completely filled, the region has recorded a total storage of 86.66% and Saurashtra has recorded a percentage filling of 87.96%.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam has been witnessing a steady inflow from Madhya Pradesh. With an average inflow of 82,000 cusecs, the dam has been releasing a total of 70,000 cusecs of water through the open radial gates as well as after the operations of the Riverbed Powerhouse and Canal Head Powerhouse to balance filling up to full capacity. The current live storage in Sardar Sarovar is 5454.20 MCM (94.69%) of the total present storage in the dam.

Major dams in the state are also nearing their full reservoir levels. In Mahisagar, Kadana at 99.84% filling and Panam at 99.97% filling are on high alert as well as Ukai dam in Tapi with 91.67% filling. Karjan Dam in Narmada district is also on alert with 87.18% filling.

An official of NWRWS department said, “There is enough storage state to meet the needs of drinking water, irrigation and industrial use. Since Narmada Dam is set to reach the FRL before the end of monsoon, there is no reason to worry. The other water bodies on Mahisagar river as well as Ukai Dam have sufficient storage and we still have about two weeks more of monsoon…”
