RTI activist strangulated to death in Tapi district

The police said Kumbhariya Sarpanch Sandeep Chaudhary on Monday informed Sanjay that Sudhir’s body has been found at a barren land near an agricultural field in Kosambiya village in the same taluka.

A 38-year-old Right to Information (RTI) activist was allegedly strangulated to death and his body disposed in the bushes at Tapi district on Monday.

The police identified the deceased as Sudhir Chaudhary, a resident of Kumbhariya village in Dolvan taluka. “He had left his house on Sunday afternoon to visit his friend at Umarvav village in the same taluka but did not return on Sunday,” said a police officer.

The police said Sudhir used to stay with his elder brother Sanjay Chaudhary and his family. Sudhir, who was unmarried, did not have a job and was helping tribals facing issues, said the officer.

The police said Kumbhariya Sarpanch Sandeep Chaudhary on Monday informed Sanjay that Sudhir’s body has been found at a barren land near an agricultural field in Kosambiya village in the same taluka.

While Sanjay and other family members identified the body as that of Sudhir, the Dolvan police sent the body for postmortem examination. Sanjay went on to file a complaint against an unknown person at Dolvan police station. The FIR was lodged on Monday night under sections sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of Evidence) of the Indian Penal Code.

Dolvan police Sub-Inspector B B Pardhane said, “Sudhir Chaudhary was beaten up and later strangulated to death by some unknown person. His body was later disposed nearby an agricultural field. He was an RTI activist and used to regularly file applications under the Act concerning different government departments.”

“We cannot say who is involved in the incident… We are trying to find out how many RTI applications he has filed recently and against whom. We will to talk to his friends,” Pardhane added.
