Gold dust along with gold in semi-processed form, weighing 1,822 grams and worth Rs 1.45 crore, was stolen from a jewellery manufacturing unit after four men climbed up a drainage pipe to enter the premises, in Surat during the wee hours on Sunday.

According to police, the four persons, wearing monkey caps and masks, climbed up the drainage pipe on the backside of Jinwala Udhyog building and reached the second floor where they opened the exhaust fan outlet and entered into the gold refining department of Mezariya Jewels Private Limited.

The miscreants opened three beakers where gold in powder form was kept, transferred the contents in a bag, and escaped from the same route they took to arrive on the premises, said police. The incident came to light at 7am when the company’s security guard reached the second floor and found the exhaust fan broken and chemicals lying on the floor.

The guard called the factory owner, Jignesh Italiya, a resident of Nana Varachha and native of Bhavnagar district, and informed him about the incident. The owner then called the police.

After a complaint was lodged at Mahidharpura police station, the police checked the CCTV footage inside the factory and found four men entering the premises and carrying out the theft. Police have registered an FIR pertaining to the theft and began a probe.

Talking to The Indian Express, Mahidharpura police inspector H M Chauhan said, “Over 100 people work at the firm. The miscreants directly entered the gold-refining unit on the second floor …We suspect they were aware about the place where the gold dust was kept… they did not enter other departments which had gold jewellery. We are questioning all the employees.”
