A five-year-old girl, who had stepped out of her house to attend an event at a neighbourhood temple, was kidnapped by a 45-year-old man who allegedly took her to his home where he raped her, Surat police said.

The incident took place on Sunday night and the man was arrested a few hours later. According to police, the minor had gone to the temple to attend Sundar Kaand and dozed off on the premises.

Her parents were at home at the time, said the police. The accused, who was seated next to the girl, picked her up and took her to his house on his bike, said police, adding the girl was asleep all this while. Meanwhile, when the girl did not return home, her parents began a search for her and informed the police.

The police, during their probe, identified the bike used by the accused and reached his house, officers said. The minor girl was then rescued, they added. The victim’s father lodged a complaint of rape and kidnapping against the accused, identified as Pramod Gaud, who was arrested during the wee hours of Monday.

Police also carried out a medical examination of the victim and the accused. Gaud was later produced before the Surat district court by the police, which sought a 7-day police remand. The court granted them a four-day remand of the accused.

A police officer connected with the probe said, “The accused works at a textile factory. The accused had sexually assaulted the girl; her condition is stable now.”
