Refuses to discuss matter in Assembly as it is sub judice and pending before the Supreme Court
Congress members today staged a walkout when a resolution for discussion on the Ranganath Mishra Commission recommending reservation for Dalit-converts to Islam and Christianity was introduced in the Assembly by Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Fakirbhai Vaghela.
Introducing the resolution,Vaghela said that social status of Dalits change after religious conversion and hence, they could not be considered for SC status and reservation. He asked the Central government not to implement the recommendations and warned that its implementation would lead to social division in the country.
Before staging a walk out,Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Shaktisinh Gohil told the House that it was not advisable to discuss the matter in the state Assembly because it was pending before the Supreme Court and sub judice. Gohil also argued that the report was tabled in the Lok Sabha just a day ago and it was yet to be discussed in the Parliament.
He urged Speaker Ashok Bhatt to postpone the discussion on the issue.
But Bhatt did not agree and allowed discussion on the issue, prompting the Opposition to stage a walkout. The resolution was passed by a majority vote.
