More than 150 officials of the fire department of the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) kicked off a drive to seal units that do not have a no objection certificate (NOC).
Surat Chief Fire Officer Basant Pareekh said, “We have started a drive in all nine municipal zones and started sealing the shops that do not have NOC or have not renewed the NOC. Our teams are also checking if the fire safety equipment is fully functional. The drive will continue.”
In another big move, Surat District Education Officer Bhagirathsinh Parmar issued a circular to 1,796 schools, reminding them to follow safety norms. “In the summer season, there is a rise in temperature amid prevailing heatwave. Careless usage of electronic equipment can cause a fire incident. The schools have to follow norms of School Safety Policy, 2016,” read the circular.
“Before the start of a new academic year, all fire safety equipment should be installed and checked a week before school reopens. All schools are advised to prepare a safety plan… The school authorities should teach students/ teachers about the utility of fire safety equipment. An awareness of fire safety and disaster management should be a part of morning prayers. DEO (district education officers) will pay surprise visits to schools to check whether the norms are followed,” it added.
Surat district education officer said, “We have issued circulars to all private and government schools and strictly told them to follow safety measures. If any schools is found not obeying the instructions, strict action will be taken.”
