Bhogilal Darji,an underworld operative wanted in the 2000 Bhaskar-Paresh abduction case, was detained by the Rajkot Crime Branch from the Delhi international airport on Thursday night.
Darji, against whom a red-corner notice was issued by the Interpol, had fled to Dubai 12 years ago after the abduction, which was allegedly done by the Aftab Ansari gang.
A PTI report said Darji was deported from the UAE.
Rajkot police commissioner H P Singh said the police team that detained Darji in the Capital had left for the city. Darji will be arrested upon his arrival in Rajkot, he added.
His two accomplices, including Ansari who had planned the attack on American Centre in Kolkata and one Raju Unadkat from Rajkot, were deported from the UAE in 2002 and arrested.
Two other high-profile accused Asif Raza Khan and Fazl-Ul-Rehman were arrested earlier. In 2001,Khan,brother of Amir Raza Khan who is said to be a founding member of Indian Mujahideen, was killed in an encounter by the Rajkot police.
In 2010,Darjis son Nitin was arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch and handed over to the Rajkot police.
City-based jeweller Prabhudas Parekhs son Bhaskar and his friend Paresh Shah,a ready-made garment shop owner, were abducted on December 11,2000. The abductors had allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs 20 crore. Police investigations revealed Darji had made the ransom calls.
While police had rescued Paresh,Bhaskar was taken to Delhi by the gang. He was released reportedly after the ransom was paid.
So far, nearly 50 persons have been arrested in the case.
