Property papers go missing during I-T raid

A bag containing documents of a property worth Rs 20 crore went missing from the house of an accountant of a Junagadh-based builder while Income Tax department officials were conducting a search there on Thursday.

A bag containing documents of a property worth Rs 20 crore went missing from the house of an accountant of a Junagadh-based builder while Income Tax department officials were conducting a search there on Thursday.

Department officials filed a complaint in this regard on Friday,Junagadh city police said,adding they suspect it could be a handiwork of builder Jasu Vaghasia and his employee Meghji Virani.

According to the complaint,the incident occurred when simultaneous raids by I-T teams from Rajkot were going on at the house of Virani and premises belonging to Vaghasia. “The bag with documents related to a property reportedly worth Rs 20 crore was found from Virani’s house. But it went missing before the search got over,” said a police officer.

The builder and many of his employees have been interrogated while Virani has been admitted to a hospital reportedly due to some medical complications,they added.

The I-T department has been searching premises of various builders in Junagadh,Jamnagar and Rajkot since Wednesday.

Sources said that so far they have raided as many as 48 places,including 40 in Junagadh,six in Rajkot and two in Vadodara.
