Ravi Jankar (36), senior manager at an Ahmedabad-based engineering firm, cycles to work from Odhav to Prahladnagar and back, covering 30 km. He is one of several people who decided to cycle to work in view of Ahmedabad’s traffic woes.
It has been six months since Jankar took to cycling, with a little encouragement from MYBYK, a bike share programme launched in April 2015.
“I was transferred to Ahmedabad from Pune three years ago. I used to take a car to work, but slow moving traffic and the lack of traffic discipline frustrated me. I shifted to a bike, but I used to get tired while paddling back to home. Then, I shifted to AMTS buses, but I was late for work. But after I got to know about MYBYK, I started to cycle for 2 km from my house to the nearest BRTS bus stand, and then from the other bus stand to my office for six km. I liked the experience, and later I started cycling for 8-10 km. One day, I tried cycling the whole route from my home to my workplace. I got tired, but I persisted.”
For the last two months, Jankar he has not broken the streak. “I have bought a year-long membership (of MYBYK). The cycle helps me to easily wiggle out of congested streets and heavy traffic… My weight has also reduced from 112 kg to 98 kg in six months,” he said.
He said by car he used to take one hour and 15 minutes to office, but now he takes only 45 minutes.
