The Patel community means a society which is a subject of study for scholars, remarked Union Home Minister Amit Shah while appreciating their contributions in various fields, according to a government release.

Shah made these remarks while inaugurating the phase-2 of a girls’ hostel and a Rs 100 crore ‘Daughter Adoption Scheme’ at Sardardham, a social organisation of the Patidar community.

“If every community becomes aware in this way, the government’s work will become easy and simple,” Shah was quoted as saying in the government release while lauding the Patidar community.

“The Patel society is a society which is a subject of study for scholars. Every subject of business, employment, transportation established by this community is a subject of study… that is how dominance can be maintained for years. They have made a very big contribution towards the development of Gujarat,” he added.

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had virtually addressed the inauguration of the girls’ hostel building while acknowledging the contributions of the community. The PM had stated that while he “may have earned merit by assigning tasks in the past, it is they (Patidar community) who have fulfilled those tasks and delivered results”, adding, that in “his entire public life so far, there has never been an instance where his expectations were not met, and this trust continues to fuel his desire to assign new responsibilities”.

The Union Minister described the launch of the girls’ hostel as a “noble work” and added that “parents are afraid of putting their daughters in hostels, but when such a safe system is created by their society, then even daughters from remote villages will be able to attain higher education and secure their future”.

Appreciating the efforts of the community to “make girls strong through higher education for their development”, Shah said, “in 40 years of his public life, he has visited many educational institutions, libraries, hostels, out of which the hostel arrangement made at Sardardham are really nice and convenient for the students”.

Shah suggested to the trustees present during the event that this institution should “start classes for learning Gujarati and Hindi languages for the students living in the hostel. So that this young generation can learn their mother tongue, understand the common language of the society and can easily do social service in the future”.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel is one of the founding trustees of Sardardham. Shah also suggested that the e-library of the institution should be connected online with other libraries and more books should be made available.
