Passenger jumps off train: Fact-finding panel submits report

The one-member fact-finding committee, appointed by the Vadodara divisional railway manager,to investigate the death of a passenger who jumped off the train near the Vishwamitri station on Saturday, has submitted its report.

The one-member fact-finding committee, appointed by the Vadodara divisional railway manager,to investigate the death of a passenger who jumped off the train near the Vishwamitri station on Saturday, has submitted its report.

On Saturday evening,Arvind Ninama (25) allegedly jumped off a running train after being unable to produce his ticket while the ticket collector,Bittu Sharma, was doing the rounds. The passengers had beaten up Sharma alleging that he had pushed Ninama out of the train after having a brawl with him.

Sources said prima facie investigation suggests that Sharma was not responsible for the death of the passenger.

“The report has been submitted but we are yet to take a decision on it. However, the in-house investigation shows that the deceased had jumped off the train and wasn’t pushed. The deceased, who did not have the ticket, found it safer to climb down the train thinking that the train was running at a slow pace near the Vishwamitri station. However,he misjudged the speed and died in the process,” said A K Srivastava,Divisional Railway Manager.

Divisional Commercial Manager M R Mirza, who had carried out the investigation, said: “This was more of a summary of the whole incident. The videos shown by news channels were scanned, the driver of the train and the other railway officials present at the site were interviewed. This, however, needs a thorough investigation at the judicial level.”

Inspector K S Patel with Government Railway Police,Vadodara, said: “We are in possession of the videos, which are being scanned. We are looking into the matter.”

Meanwhile, the Western Railways Employees Union submitted a memorandum to the Divisional Railway Manager and the Superintendent of Police on Tuesday protesting against the manhandling of railway employees while on duty. They submitted the memorandum following TTE Sharma was beaten up by passengers on Saturday after Ninama jumped off the train.
