The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has given environmental clearance to ONGCs two exploration projects in the Kutch offshore area worth Rs 1,180 crore.
The clearance has been accorded to these projects subject to strict compliance to certain specific conditions including ensuring no impact on flora fauna due to drilling of wells in the offshore sea.
The company shall undertake conservation measures to protect the marine animals/biota in the region. The company shall monitor the petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals concentration in the marine fish species regularly and submit report to the Ministry, MoEF stated while giving the nod to for both the projects.
Initially,five exploratory wells will be drilled in the Kutch-Saurashtra Offshore Blocks GK-OSN-2009/2. If hydrocarbon is discovered in these five wells,two more wells will be drilled thereafter,as per ONGCs proposal for the project that will cost Rs 580 crore. All the proposed drilling will be carried out at locations beyond five kms from the coastline in an area covering 1,242 square kms. The depth of the wells will be around 4200 meters.
