Ten days after the theft of three sandalwood trees from M S University campus,another tree from Sayaji Baug was chopped off in the early hours of Friday. Following the incident,the Parks and Gardens Department of Vadodara Municipal Corporation has slapped a fine on the security guard,responsible for patrolling in the night hours.
Sources said the incident took place between 3 am and 3.45 am on Friday,when one sandalwood tree in front of the Science Park,near gate number 1 of Sayaji Baug,was cut down and carried away.
According to Bhaskar Joshi,the security guard in-charge at Sayaji Baug,two security guards were posted at the gate last night. There is a bunch of sandalwood trees near the planetarium,while there is a single tree near the Science Park. More patrolling is carried out in that area near planetarium. However,last patrolling near the Science Park was at 2.30 am when the tree was there. The incident took place after the last patrolling, claimed Joshi.
The matter came into notice in the morning following which a case was registered at Sayajigunj police station. After the incident,additional security personnel have been deployed and patrolling has been increased. The security guards will be provided with jeeps to carry out more number of patrolling in the night, said Joshi.
Parks and Gardens (VMC) director V Chikhalia said,This is the first time in two years that such a theft has occurred in Sayaji Baug. The number of incidents of sandalwood theft has increased in the city lately. The security guard has been slapped with a fine for his irresponsibility so that such incidents are not repeated.
