A week after drivers of BRTS were allegedly beaten up by a mob following a minor accident, the city police commissioner amended his earlier notification for the bus service corridor by prohibiting jaywalkers and carriages pulled by animals from coming onto it.
The entry of non-motor vehicles pulled by beasts of burden and handcarts is hereby prohibited on the BRTS route from Gondal Chowkadi to Madhapar Chowkadi. Movement of jaywalkers is also prohibited on the BRTS route, said a notification issued Thursday.
The entire 10 km-route has been declared a no-parking zone too. The municipal commissioner had visited the route Saturday and warned of action against those parking their vehicles along the route. The police action comes after Rajkot Municipal Commissioner Ajay Bhadus June 28 letter to police commissioner Harjeswar Singh.
According to the letter, private vehicles and jaywalkers frequently enter the BRTS corridor obstructing operations of buses and posing threat of accident. To ensure smooth operations and public safety, the previous notification (of August 2011) is amended, the notification stated.
The BRTS drivers had gone on a flash strike on July 13 after a mob allegedly beat three of them near Mavdi Chowk after a BRTS bus knocked down a motorcyclist. Three buses were also vandalised and the service remained suspended on June 14.
