Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who already enjoys a Z plus security cover, will now have the extra security of specially trained Gujarat Police commandos. Z plus security entails 36 commandos of the National Security Guard (NSG). The additional security personnel will be drawn from a special battalion of commandos. Some of them are already undergoing advanced training at an academy in Jodhpur,Rajasthan.
DGP S S Khandwawala confirmed the development. He,however, said he had no specific intelligence input indicating any increased security threat to the chief minister.
The DGP said these commandos will be deployed for Modis security as well as for other VVIP protection duty.
He said: We have handpicked some well-trained commandos from the state police for this highly advanced commando training. They will be absorbed for the CM and VVIP security. Some of them will be part of the Chetak commando force also.
The Chetak commando force was formed after the 2002 Akshardham attack, and the personnel were trained at the NSG Training Academy at Manesar in Haryana.
Superintendent of Police Rajiv Ranjan Bhagat,in-charge of CMs security, said a highly-equipped security force guards Modi. It includes five commandos who were earlier with the PMs. These personnel had undergone advanced six-month training before serving on the PMs security team.
Four hundred commandos have been selected from Gujarat for this advanced training programme headed by Major General Balbir Singh,a retired Army officer. At present,100 of them are undergoing the initial phase of training. General Singh has been contracted by the Rajasthan Police Academy to impart training at its Jodhpur centre, and the Rajasthan Government had agreed to train the Gujarat commandos.
Police sources said these commandos are trained to counter any terror attack or other security threats. In Jodhpur, they will undergo advance training in anti-terrorism,survival,evacuation,and countering threats in riots-like situations, among others.
