Amid tight security, the 136th Lord Jagannath rath yatra began in Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning.

Amid tight security, the 136th Lord Jagannath rath yatra began in Ahmedabad on Wednesday morning. As per tradition, elephants had a first glimpse of Lord Jagannath and led the procession, which set off from the over 400 year-old iconic Jagannath temple in Jamalpur area in Ahmedabad.

The procession was flagged off from Jagannath Temple in Jamalpur at 7 am with chief minister Narendra Modi performing the “pahind” — the ceremonial sweeping of the chariot. Amidst heavy security, the yatra was led by 15 colourfully decorated elephants,98 trucks and 30 akhada, followed by hundreds of devotees and the three chariots of Lord Jagannath, his sister Subhadra and Lord Balram.

Sprouted moong, jamun, candies and fruits were distributed as prasad among thousands of devotees who had lined up across the entire route, despite heavy rains, waiting eagerly for darshan.

The procession halted for lunch around 1 pm at Shreenath temple in Saraspur that is considered Lord Jagannath’s maternal uncle’s house. Later, the procession passed through sensitive areas, including Kalupur,Prem Darwaja,Delhi Chakla,Shapur Darwaza,Dariyapur and Shahpur, returning to the Jagannath temple around 8 pm.

“Ahmedabad’s Jagannath temple rath yatra is famous world over. Since the last 136 years this tradition is going on and once again Lord Jagannathji is out on a (nagar charya) city tour to give darshan to the people,” Modi said. Modi said he was fortunate that he has repeatedly got a chance to bow at the feet of the deity to seek his blessings.

“All of us should pray to Lord Jagannath that this nation should move ahead towards peace, sadhbhavna (goodwill),unity, delight and prosperity. “The monsoon season has begun and with the blessings of Lord Jagannath,I pray that the entire country receives a good rainfall so that our farmers, villages and the poor can benefit,” he said.

According to a temple trustee,Modi performed the traditional “Pahind Vidhi” ceremony for a record 12th time.
