Three policemen were injured when around 25 youths intercepted and attacked the car in which they were taking away an arrested bootlegger in Uchhal taluka of Tapi district on Wednesday afternoon. While the injured policemen were given preliminary treatment at a local hospital,the assailants managed to free the arrested bootlegger.
On March 5,Surat police had chased down a car loaded with liquor bottles in Bardoli taluka. While the two occupants of the car managed to flee,police learnt during probe that the consignment belonged to two brothers from Nawapur in bordering Maharashtra,Pinto Gadari and Vishwas Gadari.
Days later,Bardoli police caught Pinto from his house with the help of local police and were returning when Vishwas,along with around 25 youths,intercepted their car near Sakarpada village in Uchhal taluka.
The mob pelted stones on the car and even allegedly beat up three constables,identified as Satish Karshan,Avdhesh and Deepak Vithal. They then freed Pinto and fled.
The three injured policemen later lodged a complaint at the Uchhal Police Station.
Bardoli police station inspector K N Solanki said a police team would be sent again to nab the culprits from Nawapur.
