Masterminds of GTU answer-sheet scam held

Surat police have so far arrested 14 persons, including 10 engineering students.

With the arrest of two brothers from Majuragate here on Saturday, Surat police have so far arrested 14 persons, including 10 engineering students, for their alleged involvement in the Gujarat Technical University (GTU) answer-sheets leaking scam.

The two arrested are identified as Jenish Babu Patel (23) and his brother Hemant Patel (23), both residents of Maghob village in Punakumbharia in Surat. Sources said the incident came to light a few days ago, when some ABVP leaders caught two students holding answer-sheets on the road near Chamunda hotel at Majuragate. They called up Athwa police and handed over one of them.

During interrogation, the accused identified as Vishal Patel, disclosed that, he had not performed well in the exams and feared failure. Through one of the students he came in contact with Jenish who agreed to help him . He said that Jenish was the kingpin of this scam.

Police said that the GTU answer-sheets of engineering colleges in Surat area are kept in a strong room at Girls Polytechnic College at Athwa Gate. Jeenish used to bring them from the strong room for one or two hours at night to facilitate weak students andput them back after the students wrote the answers.

Athwalines police inspector D P Vaghela said, “ The main persons behind this are Hemant and his brother Jenish. Hemant, a contractual staff, uploads the barcode roll number of students on the GTU website. Jenish used to take between Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 35,000 per answer-sheet from students. We suspect the involvement of more people in this racket.”

D P Vaghela added, “Till now we have arrested 12 people out of which ten are engineering students. With two more arrest on Saturday early morning, the total number of arrested had reached up to 14.”
