Man Watch

The first men’s fashion week has given a much needed boost to the fledgling career prospects of male models in the country.

The first men’s fashion week has given a much needed boost to the fledgling career prospects of male models in the country. At the Van Heusen India Men’s Week,a slew of male debutantes are cashing on their good looks and hoping to carve out a future for themselves in the world of fashion. Take the case of 18-year old Shaz Qureishi,a class 11 student from JD Tytler School in New Rajender Nagar who walked the ramp for designer Nitin Bal Chauhan. “I have always wanted to become a model and who doesn’t enjoy a bit of fashion,” said Qureishi who strutted and posed in a gothic T-shirt,appearing no less confident than any seasoned model on the ramp.

Harmeet Kalsi,a 24-year-old Amritsar lad is a former bodybuilder and a karate champion. Egged on by his brother,Jas Wadhwa,a model himself,Kalsi decided to give a shot to “life as a pretty boy”. Over a period of two months,Kalsi shed 16 kilos. “I weighed around 100 kilos initially and now I weigh 84 kilos,” smiled Kalsi, who almost missed the cut at the model auditions. “I wasn’t chosen but I got in,thanks to FDCI President Sunil Sethi’s magnanimity,” gushed Kalsi who has since moved base to Delhi. He walked the ramp for designer Aslam Khan and Himmat Singh, cutting a natty figure in a traditional dhoti.

Meanwhile, life for South African fashion photographer Chris Ladewig,22,took a surprising turn after he accompanied his brother to a model agency. “I never planned to become a model. I just went with my younger brother Brandon to give him moral support when the organisers told me to give it a shot as well,” smiled Ladewig,on his first trip to India. So far,he has walked the ramp for Shantanu and Nikhil ,Nitin Bal Chauhan and Manoviraj Khosla. However, life as a male model hasn’t been so breezy. “Things aren’t really as smooth backstage as in other shows in Hong Kong,” said Ladewig, who will be walking the ramp at Lakme Fashion week in Mumbai next. Ladewig has shot campaigns for S Oliver and the Harrods store in London.

Another gentleman who took a shy turn on the ramp for designer Nitin Bal Chauhan is Auztynn Shimray,a 22-year-old bartender who also runs a rock band in Delhi. “I have always been interested in fashion and when Nitin approached me with the idea of regular guys walking the ramp I jumped at it,” said Shimray. At Chauhan’s show, out of the 27 male models, only three were professional models. A stylist,a copywriter,a graphic artist,a creative head of an agency and a musician from a rock band,Prestorika were some of the other men who walked the ramp.
