The Special Investigation Team probing into the Ishrat Jahan encounter case submitted an interim report in a sealed cover to the Gujarat High Court on Wednesday. The interim report would be tabled in the High Court on Friday for a hearing in this case.
The SIT officials said,An interim report was submitted in the HC on Wednesday. The HC has listed the hearing for Friday. We have submitted our findings in this case so far in the report.
According to the SIT,the submission of an interim report itself indicates that the SIT has not finished its investigations and it needs more time for investigations. The SIT officials also added that they are still investigating further on the genuineness of the encounter, which is a point of debate between the SIT members.
The report was submitted following the directions from a division bench of
justices Jayant Patel and Abhilasha Kumari which during the last hearing on September 10 had asked the three-member panel, headed by IPS officer R R Verma,to submit its final report by today.
Ishrat (19) and her aides,Javed Sheikh,Amjad Ali Rana and Zeeshan Johar were allegedly killed in a police encounter in Ahmedabad on June 15,2004.
The Ahmedabad Crime Branch had then claimed the deceased were members of Lashkar-e-Toiba who had come to kill Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
The probe in the case is being supervised directly by the HC which constituted the SIT last year to investigate into genuineness of the encounter.
