(Express Photo) A record 1,07,552 passengers travelled by the Ahmedabad Metro on Sunday when the Indian Premier League (IPL) final between Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings was initially scheduled. While unanticipated heavy showers in the city pushed the match to Monday, the Ahmedabad Metro recorded its highest-ever single-day footfall.
The 2023 IPL cricket matches at Narendra Modi Stadium at Motera seem to have pushed up the daily ridership for the Ahmedabad Metro by around 80 per cent, official data shows.

According to Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC), the average daily ridership of Ahmedabad Metro between January and March was around 40,000 passengers. Meanwhile, the ridership recorded on Sunday was 167 per cent higher. During IPL matches held at the stadium — located at the northern end of the North-South corridor of Ahmedabad Metro — between March 31 and May 28, the daily ridership has oscillated between 72,000 and 99,000. Nine matches were held at the stadium during this period.
On Sunday, Ahmedabad Metro earned Rs 18.73 lakh from ticket sales. This has surpassed the top figure recorded earlier during this IPL season on May 7 when Gujarat Titans played Lucknow Super Giants and the ridership was 99,643. On May 26, when Gujarat Titans defeated Mumbai Indians in an eliminator game at the stadium, 84,090 passengers travelled by metro.
The GMRC had earlier decided to operate for extended hours — beyond 10 pm — during the match days.
