Students of Sardar Vallabhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT),a deemed university,on Thursday staged a sit-in on the campus in Piplod after the university authorities barred a student from attending final year classes for not having sufficient attendance.

The students said that Kankan Pujari, who is pursuing Chemical Technology, was suffering from bone tuberculosis as a result of which he was not regular in classes in the third year and could not record the required minimum 60 per cent attendance.

After the protest, the authorities held a meeting with the students — which continued till late on Thursday — and decided to allow Pujari to attend classes till a final decision is taken in the next Senate meeting.

Prof S A Channiwala,in-charge Director of SVNIT,said,“We have provisionally allowed Pujari to attend final semester classes. We have also told the students that a final decision would be taken by the Senate members in the upcoming meeting.”

“We have put forward this case to the Senate on medical grounds,” he added.
