India’s first bullet train is expected to roll out between Ahmedabad’s Gandhi Ashram and Mumbai’s BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex) by August 2026, Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday. In a virtual interaction with reporters after the presentation of the interim budget by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Thursday, Vaishnaw said that the former Uddhav Thackeray-led coalition government did not give “permissions” to continue work on the project in Maharashtra.

“When Uddhav Thackeray was there, he didn’t give us the necessary permissions. However, after Eknath Shinde came into power, we got our permissions. The undersea tunnel work along with the BKC terminal station’s work has been started. Land acquisition is around 100 per cent for the project. We have completed 280 km in the bullet train project”.

The Union Minister also stated that the complex machines used for the construction during the project were initially brought from foreign countries, but now they’re being made in India. Talking about safety, he stressed that isolation technology is being used for the railway tracks to mitigate earthquakes.

Vaishnaw criticised the former UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government for their “negligence and ignorance” towards Gujarat. “Between 2009 and 2014, under the UPA government, only Rs 589 crore was allotted for Railways in the state and there was a work of just 132 km annually. Today in the budget, in comparison, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has allotted Rs 8,587 crore for the state and 701km work is being done. Gujarat’s electrification is at 97 per cent, and 87 stations are being developed under Amrit stations,” he said.

“The total investment that is coming to Gujarat is Rs 30,789 crore, and we have made 856 flyovers and underpasses in the state,” he added.
