IIT-GN board approves incentives for faculty
Ahmedabad: The newly-constituted Board of Governors (BoG) of Indian Institute of Technology,Gandhinagar (IIT-GN),which met on Friday for the first time approved all the incentive schemes for faculty recruitment,retention and mentoring to achieve academic excellence.
The BoG has approved all the improved incentive schemes in regards to payments made to faculty over and above the salary drawn by them, Director IIT-GN Prof. S K Jain said on Friday. In order to become a world class institution IIT-GN can now pay any amount to its faculty on top of the salaries drawn by them from the funds coming through donations or other resources such as creation of chairs,he added.
The BoG has also assured to support the institute in all its endeavours in pursuit to excellence,Jain said.
The IIT-GN Board of Governors is chaired by National Innovation Foundation chairman Dr R A Mashelkar,and has industrialists and bureaucrats including Chairman of Ambuja Cement Suresh Neotia,Chairman and Managing Director Moser Baer India Deepak Puri,Group Chairman Religare & Fortis Healthcare Malvinder Mohan Singh as its members.
Chief Secretary of Gujarat Dr D Rajagopalan and Additional Secretary,Higher Education in HRD ministry,GoI Ashok Thakur are also in the board.

15-yr-old girl raped,attempts suicide
SURAT: A 15-year-old girl attempted suicide in Dindoli area on Friday after she was allegedly kidnapped and raped by two youths. The police have detained two suspects and are interrogating them. The girls condition is reported to be critical.
According to the police,the victim,a resident of Neelkanthnagar in Dindoli area,was returning home from Gyandeep School at Limbayat on Tuesday evening when the two youths in an auto rickshaw intercepted her. They made her unconscious and pulled her inside the rickshaw. When the girl failed to return home till night,her family looked for her and finally informed the police about it. On Friday morning,the girl was spotted by her parents while she was returning home with her friend.
The girl told her parents that she was kidnapped and raped by the two youths. Later,when she was alone at home,she made a self-immolation bid. She was rushed to the New Civil Hospital.
Later,her parents informed the police about the rape. The Limbayat police detained the two suspects identified as Ranjeet Choudhary and Ravi,both residents of Dindoli area. Choudhary is the victims neighbour.
Inspector B S Mori said the accused had kept the girl unconscious in a room till Friday morning. In the afternoon that day,they dropped her near the railway crossing in Dindoli. After regaining consciousness,the girl called up her friend and told her that she was raped by both the accused, he said.
Mori added: We have found contradiction in her statements and she has also failed to tell us about the place where she was kept. We are interrogating both the suspects and have found that the victims father had some quarrel with Choudharys parents,while Ravi had an affair with the girl.
Coast Guard rescues 15 from sinking vessel
Ahmedabad: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has rescued 15 crew members of a sinking cargo ship some 65 miles off Okha coast in Jamnagar district,ICG officials said on Friday. The incident occurred yesterday,when the cargo vessel M V Dhananjay sailing from Porbandar to Sharjah,developed some problem and started sinking,they said. ICG officials said they dispatched a rescue team immediately on receiving the distress call. They said that despite the rough sea,all the crew members were saved and brought safely to Okha station where they were administered first aid. ICG officials further said that they have issued instructions to all other cargo vessels to remain careful while traversing in the high sea.

Girl rape: accused sent for medical test
VADODARA: The police sent an Army jawan accused of raping a minor girl for medical test to the Sir Sayajirao General (SSG) Hospital today. The jawan is currently employed as a security guard. According to Sub-Inspector S B Khant of the J P Road police station,the accused would have to undergo a DNA test to prove if he raped the girl,whom he had allegedly impregnated. Police said the incident had occurred about a month ago. But the complaint was filed on Monday when the 14-year-old girl told her parents that she was pregnant. When Jayant Khant learnt about the pregnancy,he took his daughter to his native place,Veni village near Santrampur. We asked their neighbours in the Gotri Road area and they told us that he was from Santrampur, added Khant.
