Haren Pandya phone tapping: Congress flashes IB register entries as ‘evidence’

The Gujarat Congress has come up with a copy of entries from the state IB register listing phone tapping details of slain BJP leader Haren Pandya in response to the government asking it to furnish evidence to substantiate the charge that Pandya’s phone talks were being taped.

The Gujarat Congress has come up with a copy of entries from the state IB register listing phone tapping details of slain BJP leader Haren Pandya in response to the government asking it to furnish evidence to substantiate the charge that Pandya’s phone talks were being taped.

Congress Legislature Party leader Shaktisinh Gohil on Sunday said that a high-level state government official had filed an affidavit that Chief Minister Narendra Modi was behind the tapping of Pandya’s phone calls.

“Private telephone network replacing the BSNL network had been done with the sole purpose of phone tapping,” Gohil said. He added that even ministers and senior government officials did not use official phone fearing tapping, and therefore, they would use their private phones.

Gohil also sought on know as to why an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the CM’s Office is abroad now and that what was his job profile when he was here. He said the government had not been able even to send a rejoinder to his earlier charges. What could be more clinching an evidence in the case than the state IB register’s entries where specific details were issued to officials to monitor telephonic talks between Pandya with others on calls he made from his phone,he said.

“The register clearly shows that on June 7,2002,police was asked to provide details of the phone of the friend of Pandya since the latter used his friend’s phone. On June 22,2002,IGP provided details of the phone of Pandya’s friend. This is noted in the register of the IB. What else can be a stronger evidence of telephone tapping?” he said. The same register had an entry on April 16,2002,to tap the phone of Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela. who was PCC chief at that time,Gohil added.

He went on to say that it was a well established legal norm that if an allegation is made against someone on affidavit,he should give rejoinder otherwise it is regarded that the other person has accepted the fact. The CM has not filed any rejoinder before the Commission, which makes it clear that he has accepted the fact,he added.

Pandya’s father dies in hospital
Vitthalbhai Pandya, the father of Haren, died in a city hospital here following a respiratory infection, his family members said on Saturday. Pandya,82,was admitted to the Jivraj Mehta Hospital for treatment of lung infection. Vitthal had always maintained that his son’s murder was politically motivated. He had also objected to the CBI’s conclusion that Haren was killed in an act of revenge for the 2002 state riots.
