Hardik Patel
The Judicial Magistrate First Class court of Surat district Tuesday granted bail to Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel and his aide Alpesh Katheriya in the case lodged against them for blocking a National Highway passing through Kamrej area of the district, violating district magistrate notification and causing damage to public property. The court, in the order, further mentioned that Hardik should remain present in the court on February 16.
Hardik, Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) convenor, was brought to Kathor court Tuesday afternoon and was produced before Judicial Magistrate First Class. A few days ago, Hardik’s defence lawyer had put his bail application in the court. The court granted bail to Hardik on the bond of Rs 7,500.
The incident took place on October 18, 2015, when Hardik was on his way to see the ODI match between India and South Africa in Rajkot. After his arrest, Katheriya, Surat PAAS co-convenor, and his supporters blocked the National Highway Number 8 at Kamrej in Surat district. Kamrej police had registered a case under different IPC sections against Katheriya and others in this connection.
In a parallel development, a sessions court in Ahmedabad Tuesday deferred hearing on Hardik’s bail plea in a sedition case to February 9, as the investigating officer from the city crime branch could not file reply against the plea. Additional Sessions Judge N G Dave set the date for bail plea hearing on February 9, after he was informed that the investigating officer has gone to the SC in connection with the same case, and needed more time to file his reply against the bail plea.
After the bail order, police took Hardik back to Surat District Central Jail at Lajpore later in the afternoon as one more case of sedition is registered against him in Surat. He has not got bail in the sedition case. The next hearing in the Surat sedition case will be at Surat District Principal and Sessions court on February 8.
Hardik Patel’s lawyer Y B Wala said, “Hardik was wrongfully made accused in the case registered with Kamrej police station. He was not present in Surat as at that time he was in Rajkot police custody. We’re thankful to the court that the order came in our favour.”
