Gulberg case undertrials on fast in jail,want speedy trial or bail

Eight undertrials in the Gulberg Society massacre case lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail here went on a hunger strike on Wednesday demanding speedy trial.

Eight undertrials in the Gulberg Society massacre case lodged in Sabarmati Central Jail here went on a hunger strike on Wednesday demanding speedy trial.

The undertrials refused to take their breakfast and announced to the jails staff on Wednesday morning that they would sit on an indefinite hunger strike till the authorities decide on releasing them on bail or begin trial.

Jail Superintendent R J Pargi said,“They have submitted an application seeking a speedy trial or bail,saying they have been in jail for the last 10 years awaiting trial.”

“We will forward their application to additional DGP (jails),special court in Ahmedabad and other authorities concerned on Thursday,” Pargi added.

The undertrials,while announcing the strike,did not create any nuisance,jail authorities said,adding they had submitted similar pleas in the past too.
