GSFA chief Parimal Nathwani unveils the trophy on Wednesday. Express The trophy for Gujarat Super League (GSL), the franchise-based football event, was unveiled on Wednesday by Rajya Sabha MP Parimal Nathwani. The unveiling comes ahead of the commencement of the league’s matches from May 1.
According to a press note issued by the GSL, Nathwani, who is also the president of the Gujarat State Football Association (GSFA), said that the GSL is a “major initiative of the GSFA in strengthening the football sports in Gujarat,” by making “football popular in the state”, which otherwise lags.
Owned by various corporate groups, the six teams which will be participating in the GSL tournament are Ahmedabad Avengers (owned by God TMT and Vivan Steel Pvt Ltd), Gandhinagar Giants (owned by ANVI Sports), Karnavati Knights (owned by The Address), Saurashtra Spartans (owned by the Axita Cotton Limited & Beeline), Surat Strikers (owned by Loyal Equipments Limited), Vadodara Warriors (K AND D Communication Ltd). Players from 10 states are participating in the league.
With the final match scheduled for May 12, the winning team will be awarded a prize money of Rs 11 lakh.
The matches will be held in Eka Arena stadium of Ahmedabad’s Kankaria.
