Gujarat Rain Live: Coast Guard rescues 13 fishermen on boat adrift in Arabian Sea off Gujarat coast

Amid heavy rains in Gujarat, the Indian Coast Guard has rescued 13 fishermen on board a boat adrift in the Arabian Sea off the coast in the state's Devbhumi Dwarka district, the maritime security agency said on Wednesday.

Acting on an SOS message from the owner of the fishing boat ‘Padmawati' on Tuesday, the ICG deployed its advanced light helicopter (ALH) and a ship for their rescue, it said in a statement.

The vessel was around 15 km from Dwaraka and had suffered a machinery breakdown due to rough weather and inclement sea conditions off the coast, it said.

“The ICG, as ‘First Responder At Sea', immediately deployed an ALH helicopter to take stock of the situation. Meanwhile, ICG ship Abheek was diverted for the rescue operations, despite adverse weather and very rough sea conditions,” it said.

In a nightlong operation, the ship towed the boat amid hostile weather conditions and brought it to Okha safely on Wednesday morning. All 13 crew members were safe, said the statement. (PTI)

With many parts of Gujarat's Vadodara city remaining inundated on the second consecutive day, the situation is "alarming" and the Army has been called in to carry out relief and rescue work, the state government said on Wednesday.

Some areas were under 10 to 12 feet of water, said Health Minister and government spokesperson Rushikesh Patel.

The Vishwamitri river which flows through the city crossed the danger mark of 25 feet on Tuesday morning following heavy rains and the release of water from Ajwa dam, he told reporters here after a review meeting with senior officials.

"Water level of Ajwa Dam is 213.8 feet at present. We have closed the gates so that no additional water goes into Vishwamitri river. The river is currently flowing at 37 feet, well above the danger mark. Water has spilled into the city and many areas are flooded," he said.

Four columns of the Army are at present engaged in relief and rescue work in the city, the minister said.

Siddharth Nagar, Akota, Harni-Sama road, Fatehgunj, Munjmahuda and Vadsar were among the worst-affected areas, said Patel, adding that more boats have been sent to expedite the relief and rescue work. (PTI)

Exceptionally heavy rainfall measuring over 300 mm lashed several areas of Gujarat and some parts of eastern Rajasthan in the last 24 hours, data issued by the India Meteorological Department on Tuesday showed. Meanwhile, at least five people have lost their lives in rainfall-related activities in the last 24 hours since Monday. 

The dry desert of Kutch reported flooding following incessant rainfall since Monday. The otherwise arid region experiencing extreme temperatures has, this year, recorded unprecedented rainfall spells. Flooding in eastern Rajasthan has forced the closure of roads connecting Banswara - Udaipur and many inter-district roads.

Meanwhile, districts along Gujarat's north and northeast, adjoining Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, received record rainfall as high as 340 mm in a day. Some of the wettest areas were Morbi, Vadodara, Anand, Panchmahals, Kheda, Kutch, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Mahisagar where rainfall measuring over 200 mm (exceptionally heavy rainfall category) was reported on Tuesday.

Gujarat Rain Live: Western Railway cancels 56 trains including Duronto in Gujarat

The heavy rains have taken a major toll on railway traffic with the Western Railway (WR) now cancelling a total of 56 trains in the Vadodara Division, affecting not just Central Gujarat, but also movement between Gujarat and Maharashtra as well as impacting all trains passing through Gujarat to North India.

In a video statement at 12 pm, an official of the WR said that due to severe waterlogging at three locations including Bajwa and Ranoli in Vadodara, a total of 56 trains had been cancelled, 15 short terminated and 43 trains had to be diverted along other routes.

Trains coming to Mumbai from Rajasthan and Jammu have been diverted towards Ratlam, Godhra, Vadodara and Surat. Trains from Maharashtra going to Gujarat and Rajasthan have been either diverted or short-terminated

Several memu trains have been cancelled, especially between Ahmedabad and Vadodara.

Major trains that have been cancelled include the Rajkot to Mumbai Hapa Duronto Express, Karnavati double decker, Ahmedabad-Howrah Express, Gujarat Superfast Express and Jamnagar Humsafar Express.

The Western Railway warned that all trains between Gujarat and Maharashtra have been impacted in some manner and that passengers should check the schedule of their trains before planning their journeys.

Amidst fears of flight delays and cancellations in light of the inclement weather, the management of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad warned passengers to allocate extra time for processing and reach the airport a little earlier. Passengers have also been asked to check flight schedules regularly.

Airport officials confirmed that, as of Tuesday morning, there has not been any major impact on flight schedules at this airport. However, flights that had arrived late, were departing late from Ahmedabad. There have not been any flight diversions so far.

Railway traffic in Central Gujarat has been badly impacted due to heavy rainfall in the previous 48 hours. Most affected are trains passing through and operated by the Vadodara division of Western Railway (WR).

With 12 trains cancelled on Tuesday, 5 were short terminated and 6 were run on diverted routes due to waterlogging at Bajwa station.

Heavy rainfall in Gujarat till September 1: IMD

Heavy rainfall lashed Gujarat in 24 hours until Sunday morning inundating low-lying areas, disrupting normal life and traffic movement. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for the state till September 1.

Five talukas — Vapi, Kaprada, Pardi, Umarpada and Khergam — in the southern districts of Valsad, Surat and Navsari recorded the highest rainfall between 250-330 mm.

A few places such as Vadodara, Surat, Bharuch, Navsari, Valsad, Amreli and Bhavnagar, and Anand, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Porbandar, Morbi, Dwarka and Kutch are expected to see isolated extremely heavy downpour on Monday and Tuesday respectively. Saurashtra region braces for heavy rainfall day after 4,000 evacuated amid flooding

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for several districts in Gujarat, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next five days. In response to this severe weather warning, district administrations have announced the closure of schools and colleges on Tuesday across the affected regions.

The red alert will be in effect for the Saurashtra region, including Kutch, Kheda, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Tapi, Navsari, and Valsad on Tuesday. On Monday, heavy rains caused significant flooding in Gujarat, leading to the evacuation of over 4,300 people from Vadodara, Navsari, Valsad, and Surat. The most severely impacted districts include Vadodara, Anand, Kheda, Navsari, and Panchmahal. Jayesh Khadia, Chief Fire Officer of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES), reported that a bus from Srinath Travels became stuck in an underpass. The rescue team successfully retrieved 25 individuals, including two children, from the stranded vehicle.
