A container loaded with oil washed up on Dandi beach in Gujarat’s Navsari district on Monday, prompting an investigation by police and other agencies, said police. Notably, about a month ago, an abandoned boat with Arabic inscriptions was discovered along the Navsari coast, even as the authorities are still probing its origin.
According to the police, a local fisherman had spotted the huge container floating on the beach, following which he informed the village sarpanch about the incident. The sarpanch later informed the police.
Based on the information, a team from the Jalalpore police station reached the spot and started the investigation.
“The container was filled with a chemical substance, following which, Forensic Science Laboratory officials were called. They checked the substance and, on a preliminary basis, claimed it to be oil. The officials also took some of the samples for laboratory tests,” said the police.
A police team has also been deployed near the container.
Jalalpore Police Inspector D D Ladumore said, “We have made a diary entry about the incident. Earlier, containers were found afloat on the sea coast at Porbander, Mundra, and Dwarka, on separate occasions last month”.
Ladumore added, “Looks like a huge ship carrying oil containers was on its way to Oman, but due to unidentified reasons, the containers slipped from the ship and drifted deep into the sea, approximately 40 nautical miles off the coast of Oman. These containers washed ashore at different coastal locations in Gujarat. We have intimated the discovery of these containers to the state and national agencies. A probe has been launched into the matter.”
