Monsoon withdrawal in Gujarat set to begin today, heavy rain expected this week
In September, the state received 124 mm of rain, so far.

Delayed by around 10 days, the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon is likely to commence from Monday in Gujarat. Even as the state has already received over 125 per cent of the average rainfall of the season this year, heavy rain is likely to lash several parts between September 25 and September 27, as per the weather forecast.
The Southwest Monsoon arrived in Gujarat on June 11, four days ahead of the schedule.
“Conditions are becoming favourable for the withdrawal of Southwest Monsoon from parts of West Rajasthan and Kutch around September 23,” the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated in its bulletin on Sunday. Last year, the withdrawal started on September 21.
In-charge regional director of IMD Ahmedabad Ramashray Yadav told The Indian Express, “Against the normal withdrawal schedule around September 15, it is delayed this year. As the conditions look favourable for the withdrawal, the time it will take for complete withdrawal can only be stated once it starts.”
Meanwhile, parts of the state are expected to receive another spell of heavy rainfall this coming week. “Heavy rain is expected in the districts of South Gujarat, including Dang, Tapi, Navsari, and Valsad. Light to moderate thunderstorm with lightning and surface wind 30- 40 kmph (in gust) accompanied with light to moderate rain is very likely at isolated places in all the districts of Gujarat, including Banaskantha, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Kheda, Ahmedabad, Anand, Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Tapi, Navsari and Valsad,” stated the weather department’s forecast for September 25 and September 26.
Similarly, for September 27, heavy rain is very likely expected in the districts of South Gujarat including Dang, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) in Gandhinagar, Gujarat has recorded 125.28 per cent of season’s average rainfall so far. Among regions, Kutch has recorded the highest rain at 183 per cent, followed by South Gujarat and Saurashtra that have received 130 per cent of average rainfall.
In September, the state received 124 mm of rain, so far. The highest rain was recorded in the month of August (442 mm) due to the deep depression and cyclonic storm. While July recorded 425 mm, June registered 115 mm of the total 1,106 mm received in the state.
Of 251, 125 talukas this year received above 1,000 mm of rain while 107 talukas received between 501-1000 mm and barely 19 got between 251-500 mm of rain.
In 2021, the total average rainfall received in the state during the season was 98 per cent; while it was 122 per cent and 108 per cent in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
