Gujarat govt may announce package for EWS students tomorrow

Since its formation in August, the state government’s committee had received some 100 memorandums from nearly 20 castes and sub-castes.

The state government is likely to announce a package for the socially and economically backward students on Thursday. The day marks the end of the 10-day time period during which the government was due to take some decision.

It was decided during its meeting with Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) leaders. The government has invited about 200 leaders from various castes for a meeting with the high-level committee, formed by Chief Minister Anandiben Patel to address the issue of reservation agitation, on Thursday.

Health minister and chairman of the high-level committee Nitin Patel has maintained that the package will be mostly in the form of scholarships, infrastructure and resources.

Since its formation in August, the state government’s committee had received some 100 memorandums from nearly 20 castes and sub-castes.

During the meeting with PAAS leaders and the government on September 14, the agenda set by the Patidars who seek OBC status was not reservation, but the alleged police atrocities.

The government, however, is going ahead with its agenda of releasing a package to address the complaints of higher fees in private educational institutions by the various non-reserved communities.

Not succumbing to the demand of immediate action in cases related to police atrocities, the government is firm on its stand that the issue will be handled by CID (crime) committee formed as per the High Court’s order.
