After several protests by teachers and series of meetings with senior officials, the long-pending issue of payment of salaries of more than 12,400 surplus teachers is said to have been resolved.
According to the Education Departments directions, irrespective of the new postings, these teachers will continue to draw salaries from the schools of appointment.
The issue had remained unsettled for a long period, leading to delay in accommodating the surplus teachers in primary schools. These teachers from the state governments secondary schools were declared surplus by the government after Class VIII was reduced from secondary to primary level in 2012. this was done to implement the Right to Education Act that emphasises that primary education should encompass Classes I to VIII. In Ahmedabad urban area alone, there are around 275 surplus teachers who have been adjusted at municipal primary schools.
As per the recent instructions from the Education Department, this office (DEO) passed written instructions, clarifying that payment of salaries of surplus teachers will continue to be done from the original school (where they were appointed) no matter where they have now been accommodated, said Ahmedabad District Education Officer (DEO) R I Patel.
According to government estimates, with the reduction of 11,370 classes (Class VIII) across some 6,000 secondary schools, around 12,482 teachers were put under the category of surplus. It took more than a year for the government to accommodate these teachers against the vacant posts in the primary schools.
