Gambling case: Resort owner Kalgi surrenders,gets bail

The owner of Sudama Resort,Dinesh Kalgi who is notoriously known as “Satta King” of Gujarat,was arrested after he surrendered before the city police on Sunday.

The owner of Sudama Resort,Dinesh Kalgi who is notoriously known as “Satta King” of Gujarat,was arrested after he surrendered before the city police on Sunday. He was wanted for allegedly running gambling activities from his resort in the Ellisbridge area.

He appeared before the police with an anticipatory bail application. Later,he was taken to a metro court,which granted him bail.

He is likely to be arrested again in a prohibition case,which was registered after the raid.

Last week,police had busted a gambling den at Sudama Resort and arrested 140-odd people and seized cash and valuable worth more than Rs 1 crore.

Following the raid,police were looking for Kalgi and his long-time associate Mahendra Patel alias Mukhi. Both are said to be running the resort as partners. However,Kalgi told police that he had no stake in the resort.

Deputy Commissioner of Police V Chandrashekhar said they had sufficient evidence against Kalgi and further investigation was on.

Earlier,three officers posted at the Ellisbridge police station were suspended for their alleged negligence towards gambling activities in their neighbourhood. Also,three constables,who were allegedly found helping offenders and accepting bribe on behalf of their seniors,were transferred.

In 2011,Kalgi was booked under Prevention of Anti-Social Activities following a raid on a gambling den at Sola. He was also allegedly involved cricket betting and reportedly has links with international bookies.
