A 50-year-old former Congress councillor was allegedly stabbed to death by unidentified assailants while he was out on his morning walk in Gujarat’s Anand (formerly a municipality) on Tuesday, police said, adding a probe has been launched into the matter to ascertain the motive of the crime.

According to the police, the victim, Iqbal Malek alias Bala, was attacked near Bakrol area.

Malek was walking on the track in the periphery of Goya lake when the incident allegedly took place, said police. According to the police, the crime scene is a “blind spot” with no eyewitnesses or CCTV cameras.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Anand, JN Panchal told The Indian Express that while the post-mortem report has confirmed that Malek died from stab injuries inflicted by sharp weapons, the police is on a “blind chase” as no CCTV cameras or eyewitnesses have been found in the case so far. Panchal said, “The incident occurred around 7am, when Malek was on his usual morning walk around the periphery of Goya lake in Bakrol village. He was attacked with sharp weapons and died on the spot due to injuries on his stomach, chest and neck…”

“The family has lodged an FIR at Vidyanagar police station and further probe has been initiated but no specific motive has been ascribed by the family,” said the DSP.

Panchal added that the police are gathering information through human and other technical sources in the absence of CCTV footage or eye witnesses.

“As of now, no eye witness has been found. There are no CCTV cameras as it is a rural area. We also do not know the exact number of assailants involved in the case… The body was handed over to the family members after the completion of the post-mortem examination. Further probe into the matter is underway,” added the DSP.
