The electoral authorities in Surat rejected the nomination of one of the two Muslim candidates the BJP had fielded this civic poll, for giving false information in his affidavit.

Zakir Shah had submitted in his affidavit, filed with the nomination form, that he had four children — all aged above 10 years.

But Shah has five children — the last being born on September 26,2009,which his rival candidate from the Congress told the authorities.Poll rules say that no candidate should have a third child after 2005.

The BJP dummy candidate,Imtiaz Patel, from the same ward (13 of Shahpore) will now replace Shah.Shah told The Indian Express that he will now ensure Patel’s victory in the polls.

“It was all because I misunderstood the election rules. I did not know that I should not have more than two children after 2005. I have repented for my mistake before the party leaders,” said Shah.

He,however, refused to say why he had hidden the fact that he had a fifth child,in the affidavit.Senior BJP leaders said they had no clue that Shah had a one-year-old child.
