The Ahmedabad division of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has also cashed in on the Diwali rush by earning more than Rs 19 lakh extra in just four days by operating 527 special services.
A source in the corporation said the division operated 527 special services between October 22 and 25 and earned Rs 19.34 lakh. Last year too,the state-owned transport corporation had run 5,400 extra buses during the festive days and generated extra revenue in crores.
The busiest route was Ahmedabad to Dahod-Godhra. Almost 70 per cent of these extra buses are running on Dahod-Godhra route. This is due to labourers from that region returning to their native places from different parts in the state, sources said.
During normal operations,70 to 80 buses ply on this route daily. However, due to holidays, this number has multiplied many times, they further said. Officials in the GSRTC said the decision to run extra buses was taken by monitoring the flow of passengers.
Dahod-Godhara route was followed by Ahmedabad-Vadodara-Surat. Traffic has remained high on this route also as Vadodara and Surat are also growing and many people make frequent trips to these cities, sources said. More than 200 regular buses ply on this route every day.
However, the traffic towards Saurashtra region has remained low and only five to seven extra buses have made trips on Rajkot-Junagadh-Somnath route. Traffic from Surat to Bhavnagar and Amreli has been outpaced by traffic towards Dahod-Godhara from the diamond city, officials said.
