Diamond hub installs CCTV cameras

Following a spurt in the incidents of thefts and robbery,diamond traders in Nandu Doshi Wadi in Katargam,which houses many polishing units,have installed 18 CCTV cameras in five lanes and other traders in Surat are following suit.

A few months ago,a 50-year-old delivery man in the locality was shot dead by a robber after he refused to part with diamonds. Apart from this,a number of eve-teasing incidents and break-ins have also been reported from Nandu Doshi Wadi,which is home to 350-odd small and big diamond units that employ around 35,000 workers.

Recently,Nandu Doshi Wadi Association members met police inspector of Katargam,Vinay Shukkal,who advised them to go for CCTV cameras.

Association president Arvind Hirpara said,“CCTV cameras have been effective. After these were installed,there has been no major incident. We have appointed two employees to monitor the footage. We store the recordings for twenty days.”
