(Image source: GettyImages)The Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) on Monday seized 31,000 kg of adulterated cumin — valued at Rs 89 lakh — from a factory located at Gangapur road in Unjha in Mehsana district, an official statement said. The stash of the alleged spurious spice was seized in a raid, based on a tip-off received by the FDCA.
Unjha is among the biggest markets and exporting centers for spices like cumin, fennel seeds, Isabgol, and mustard seeds.
The FDCA said that it has also recovered the raw material used to make the adulterated cumin, which includes 643 litres of jaggery liquid along with 258 kg of “mix powder”, 5,298 kg of substandard quality fennel seeds as well as 24,719 kg of adulterated cumin.
The FDCA has also collected four samples from the spot of the adulterant jaggery liquid, mixed powder, and fennel seeds to conduct laboratory tests.
The release by FDCA Commissioner Dr HG Koshia read, “In case of edible non-medical substances, it is mandatory to await laboratory test reports to ascertain the case before proceeding with the legal course of action… A deep probe has been initiated in the matter…”
