The Botad Police on Monday booked at least 65 persons including Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders Raju Karpada and Pravin Ram for attempt to murder in an FIR filed at Paliyad police station.

This action comes in light of the violence that took place at Hadadad village of Botad on Sunday evening during a kisan mahapanchayat (farmers’ meet) organised by AAP that ultimately ended in conflict with the police.

Stone pelting resulted in injuries to three police officers including constable Rohitkumar Nandram Ladhwa who received serious injuries to his head, LCB Inspector AG Solanki who also suffered serious injuries, DySP Maharshi Raval whose hands and legs suffered bruises and ASI Bhagirathsinh Virsing Limbola, who suffered minor injuries.

The police fired teargas shells and carried out a lathicharge and subsequently detained a large number of people on Sunday night itself. The FIR was filed on the basis of a complaint by Paliyad police station Inspector PD Vanda on behalf of the state.

The AAP leaders and workers have been booked for attempt to murder, criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, assaulting a public servant, voluntarily causing hurt to a public servant, voluntarily causing grievous hurt, among others. They were also booked for destruction of public property and being in violation of a notification promulgated by a public servant.

DySP Raval said, “A total of 62 people have been placed under arrest, most of them are not from Hadadad and we are checking if they have criminal antecedents and a political affiliation. A total of 70 persons who had been detained, but were found to be residents of Hadadad village and not part of the conspiracy, were questioned and let go today itself.”

Advocate Pranav Thakkar from the Aam Aadmi Party legal cell, in a video statement on Monday said the party would stand by the farmers in the legal case. He said, “A team from the AAP legal cell will visit Hadadad village on October 14 and speak to people and help represent those who have been booked by the police, without charge.” He said the party would also be filing a case.
