In the second incident, a ticket checker of Surat, Rohit Kesri, came under the scanner of the vigilance department of the Western Railway around two months back. (File) In two separate incidents in Surat, a porter’s licence was cancelled after he pressed the emergency button of a Vande Bharat train, delaying it by 10 minutes and a ticket checker was suspended after vigilance officers found excess money in his possession.
As per details from sources at the Surat railway station, on November 7, Gabbar Singh, 35, a porter and a resident of Surat, carried the luggage of an elderly person to a Vande Bharat train on platform number 1. However, he could not alight on time and the automatic doors closed.
Singh tried to open the door but couldn’t so he pressed the emergency button and alighted the train after it came to a halt.
The railway authorities reached the coach and after talking to the passengers, an inquiry was set up and statements of some of the passengers and a few stall owners were recorded.
An official posted at the Surat railway station on condition of anonymity said, “A porter is not liable to press the emergency button of a train. In fact, for his act, the train got delayed by ten minutes. The porter should have travelled and got down on the next station. Only passengers and railway officials are allowed to press the emergency button and even for then, a competent reason is necessary.”
