The lone Congress MP from Gujarat, Geniben Thakor, has written to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking permission to raise the issue of the blast at firecracker factory in Banaskantha’s Deesa which killed 21 people on Tuesday, in the house on Wednesday.
Lashing out at the BJP-ruled government in Gujarat in the letter which she posted on X, Thakor Wednesday stated, “Workers died tragically in a fire at a firecracker warehouse in Deesa, Banaskantha. This is not the first incident. Tragedies like Surat’s Takshashila (22 deaths), Morbi bridge accident (135 deaths), Rajkot game zone (27 deaths) have happened in Gujarat but the BJP government has indulged in corruption… If serious steps had been taken, these accidents could have been prevented”.

“I demand that the government constitute a high-level committee to investigate this incident and strict actions should be taken against all those responsible so that such incidents are not repeated in the future,” she said.
On Tuesday morning, 21 workers including seven children — the youngest being three years old — were killed, and six were injured, after a blast destroyed a firecracker warehouse on the outskirts of Deesa town. Of the six injured, three are at Deesa Civil Hospital, two at Palanpur Civil Hospital while one is at Ahmedabad Civil hospital. The blast had caused the building structure to blow over 100 feet onto surrounding fields.
“If allowed, I will raise the issue in the Parliament and also meet the families of the deceased and injured and offer all the help possible,” Thakor said.
