Compared to last year, 80% drop in e-challans issued in Ahmedabad in first 6 months of 2023
According to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), responsible for installing traffic policing infrastructure, of the 113 junctions equipped with CCTV cameras in the city, e-challans are being issued only from 48.

Even with Ahmedabad recently witnessing several accidents due to rash driving and the traffic police claiming it has been proactive in cracking down on violators, the number of e-challans issued has dropped drastically in 2023 compared to last year.
Data shared by the Ahmedabad traffic department shows that the number of e-challans issued in the first six months of this year is only about a quarter of what was issued during the same period last year. While between January and June 2022, 8.67 lakh e-challans were issued with fine worth Rs 64.7 crore imposed, till June this year, 2.11 lakh e-challans have been issued and violators fined Rs 13.6 crore — a drop of around 80 per cent.
A significant drop in the issuance of e-challans has been observed since February this year. Sample this: against the 1.22 lakh e-challans issued last February, the traffic police issued only 20,000-odd e-challans this February. The fine imposed this June is 11 times less that last June’s figure.
According to the department, while it has imposed fines worth over Rs 130 crore in 2022 — of which only 20 per cent have been recovered from violators — till June 2023, fine worth only Rs 13.68 crore have been imposed. The average ticket size for 2022 was Rs 760 compared to Rs 650 this year.
The traffic police attribute the decline to the Union government’s ‘One Nation One Challan’ initiative. Officials maintained that centralisation of the process of generating challans has resulted in fewer e-challans and that the drop is not necessarily indicative of the reduced number of violations.
According to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), responsible for installing traffic policing infrastructure, of the 113 junctions equipped with CCTV cameras in the city, e-challans are being issued only from 48.
Additional Commissioner (Traffic) of Ahmedabad City Police, Narendra Kumar Chaudhari, said: “Of the Rs 130 crore-fine levied in 2022, only 20-21 per cent of the violators ended up paying the penalty.” “The e-challans are sent to the violator’s phone number registered with the RTO
