A Gram Rakshak Dal personnel, along with husband of Chikhatiya village sarpanch in Navsari district, rescued a Class X Board examinee while she was attempting suicide by hanging herself at her home on Thursday.
According to the Navsari police, around 2.15 pm on Thursday, police station officer Radha Bhulabhai from Vansda police received a call from a cellphone number. “The caller was a girl. She said, ‘I am studying in Class X and my Board exams will start next week. I cannot remember what I have studied… I am in shock and will die by suicide’,” Bhulabhai told The Indian Express. She added that while she tried to keep the conversation going, the girl abruptly disconnected the call.
“If I had sent someone from the police station to Chikhatiya, it would have taken around 30 minutes… I went on to call Gram Rakshak Dal jawan Minesh Gaekwad who was at home in Chikhatiya… and asked him to reach the girl’s house immediately,” said Bhulabhai.
Gaekwad went on to call up village sarpanch Dharmishtaben’s husband Kiran Patel and narrated the incident.
When contacted, Gaekwad said, “Kiran Patel managed to trace the family in the village. When he reached their house, a man said his daughter was studying on the first floor of the house. We knocked on the girl’s door but found it locked from inside. We raised an alarm but there was no response from the girl.”
“I found some iron bars nearby and used them to climb on to the balcony of the first floor. The girl’s door was open… I found her trying to hang herself by standing on a stool with a dupatta tied to a ceiling hook. As I managed to get hold of her, Kiran Patel and others entered the room by breaking open the door,” he added.
Gaekwad said the girl was bleeding as her left wrist had five cut marks made by a knife. She was taken to a hospital in the neighbouring Ranifalia village, where she is undergoing treatment.
Vansda police Sub-Inspector J V Chavda said, “Radhaben saved the life of the girl with help of the Gram Rakshak Dal jawan… We believe the girl called the police station because she wanted to ensure her parents do not face any legal hassels.”

Navsari SP Sushil Agrawal said, “We have prepared appreciation letters for the officer from Vansda police station and the Gram Rakshak Dal jawan… we will organise an event and hand over the letters to them. The officer had taken the right decision of sending Gaekwad to rescue the girl. If she would have sent a team from the police station, it would have taken some time, as the village is over 30 km away and the girl could have already ended her life by then.”
