The Traffic Polices initiative to keep tabs on Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Services (AMTS) buses and drivers seem to have fizzled out. Regular checks on AMTS buses and drivers have been discontinued within two months of its initiation.
Few of the Traffic Polices initiative included: Regular checks on drivers (especially those known for rash driving),mandatory uniforms for AMTS drivers for easy identification, and deployment of more personnel at the bus depots.
Besides, steps were also initiated to take strict action against those found driving rashly and those without uniforms. A drive was also undertaken to check the licences of AMTS drivers after The Indian Express reported that many of them had only autorickshaw licences. The initiative went on for some two months.
Ganpat Patel,Depot Manager of Lal Darwaza Depot said: The Traffic Police had checked licenses at each and every junction in the city. Many were caught without licenses and the matter was reported to AMTS. The checking was strict and the ones caught driving rashly were reported to AMTS authorities. But after two months, the check was discontinued and no traffic personnel were found at the junctions or depots.
Officials said a major reason behind the introduction of uniforms was to keep tabs on the drivers of private buses who often shuffled duties without informing authorities. The mad rush to clock maximum kilometres for more money was the main reason behind rash driving and accidents, they said.
But the private bus drivers have been found driving without a proper uniform and the police have not taken any steps against it.
Jt. Commissioner of Police,Traffic,Mohan Jha said the initiatives did not work out fully.
We couldnt deploy more personnel at the traffic junctions, depots, and check the drivers because there have been a lot of VIP/VVIP movements in the city from last year. We are in constant touch with AMTS authorities and that has helped in bringing down the number of accidents, he said.
He added: We are doing our bit and have stepped up our drive against the errant drivers. We conducted a training session for them recently.
He,however, refused to comment on the penalisation of drivers caught without uniforms.
