Chandola lake demolition Phase 2: 8,500 structures razed, of 2.5 lakh square metres of land cleared

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday said it has on a single day completed the demolition of 8,500 structures deemed as encroachment in Chandola lake area and freed up an area of 2.5 lakh square metres that had been “illegally occupied” for decades.

Notably, 1.5 lakh square metres of land had been freed from encroachment in the first phase of the demolition drive in the area carried out between April 29 and May 1.

According to a statement from the AMC, teams from all seven zones of the civic zones had joined the drive on Tuesday.There were a total of 50 teams , which began the work at 7 am, said a statement by the Deputy Estate Officer, South Zone.

A total of 50 bulldozers were used to raze structures, while police personnel in excess of 3,000, stood guard.

A senior official told The Indian Express that on Wednesday, a few remaining structures would be demolished and the debris will be cleared.

Simultaneously, work for deepening the lake bed will also start on Wednesday. The construction of a boundary wall around the premises to prevent future encroachment will begin. Eventually, water will be let into the lake, as per officials.
