The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is on the lookout for a specific intelligence dossier reportedly on Sadiq Jamal Mehtar the Bhavnagar boy who was killed in an alleged fake encounter by Gujarat Police in 2003,by branding him a terrorist out to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other saffron leaders.
CBI investigating officer Satish K Rathi met senior central IB officials in Ahmedabad on Tuesday seeking the particular file. He is said to have asked the IB officials to provide all the documents related to the inputs generated and which were shared with the Gujarat Police before the encounter killing.
However, sources said that Rathi returned empty-handed after intelligence officials explained that such a demand should be routed through their headquarters in New Delhi. Besides,Rathi was also explained that the agency didnt have any specific file containing inputs related to Sadiq alone.
IB never had any file named after Sadiq. The agency shares inputs with other agencies under a particular folder name and the input related to Sadiq was also shared under that folders name. The IB officials refused to share inputs citing any such request by probing agency has to be routed through headquarters, sources said.
The CBI chargesheet in the Sadiq encounter case has statements by IB officials that confirm the intelligence agencys role in the handing over of Sadiq to the Gujarat Police. Sources said that some of the officials in Mumbai police have told the CBI that the custody of Sadiq was handed over to Gujarat Police only after IBs intervention.
This is the reason CBI is desperately looking for a specific file containing all the inputs generated with regards to Sadiqs alleged link with terror outfits. According to sources, the CBI still hasnt got enough evidence to nail IB officials allegedly involved in the encounter.
It has also been learnt that CBI is likely to record statements of junior police officials under code of criminal procedure section 164,who were posted at Detection of Crime Branch during the encounter.
