The Van Heusen India Men’s Week proved to be a crowd turner with Delhi’s socialites Riddhima Sahni,Dior’s India representative Kalyani Chawla and gallerist Aarti Singh marking their attendance on all three days. Party goers were elbow to elbow at the Whyte & Mackay and Van Heusen lounge. But it was largely unclear whether the people for whom it was aimed,(read domestic and international buyers) would oblige. The buyers’ stall across the lounge saw humdrum attendance, with day one marking the lowest turnout. “These three days are intended to give the buyers a chance to pick up the best menswear offered in India,” said Sunil Sethi, president,Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). There were 56 registered buyers, but only a small percentage turned up.

The international buyers marking their presence at the week were Doris Pietrak from Anthropologie,a Philadelphia-based store that retails women’s wear,David Schneider from Texnorte and fashion consultant Thibault Briere who runs a store Fashionslave in Zurich and Paris. Meanwhile,on the domestic front,Feroza Dalal, representative from Aza Men and three representatives from Wills Lifestyle were spotted.

Paris-based Briere,on his first visit to India, was buying for his Indian clients—Goachic label set up by two French nationals Alexandre Zurcher and Chris Balzac in Goa. “If I like something,I will definitely buy it. I quite liked the Fightercock collection by Abhishek Gupta and Nandita Basu,” said Briere. Pietrak, though, was not keen on buying. “We largely retail women’s wear in Anthropologie, there’s very little scope of menswear at our store,” she explained. The designers on their part looked reconciled to the fact that the event was more of a brand exercise than serious business. “In India it’s primarily womenswear which means business,so we are taking this opportunity to bring to the foreground the kind of work that is being done for menswear. There are that many ways menswear has evolved and this is a perfect platform to showcase it. The business will follow,” said designer Nikhil Mehra. Meanwhile,Dalal was spotted at designer Zubair Kirmani’s stall, placing fresh orders for shirts. “Zubair has already been retailing with us for the past two months and we are in the process of finalising the orders,” Dalal shared. However, she refrained from disclosing her budget. Another designer Dalal zeroed on was JJ Valaya, who had been retailing earlier at Aza Men. Aza Men is a retail chain that houses designers like Rohit Bal,Manish Malhotra,Narendra Kumar,Lecoanet Hemant,Rajesh Pratap Singh,Raghavendra Rathore and Manoviraj Khosla among others.

Meanwhile,Atul Malhotra from Chennai-based store Evoluzione was spotted at designer Nitin Bal Chauhan’s stall. “We retail a lot of designer brands from our chain and most of them were present. Nitin’s clothes are quite affordable and have that extra zing,” said Malhotra. The order books are still waiting to be filled up.
